Orrefors

Across the world people associate Orrefors with beautiful crystal. Both the art glass and the utility glass make our everyday a bit more beautiful. In collaboration with their talented designers Orrefors presents a new crystal collection every spring and autumn. The collection is produced in an unlimited edition. Orrefors art glass is always produced in a limited edition. The artists work very freely with the limited art glass to develop, or discover new techniques and expressions.

The artists
The Orrefors group of artists consists of Lena Bergström, Jan Johansson, Erika Lagerbielke, Malin Lindahl, Martti Rytkönen and Ingegerd Råman. The design process is closely connected to both the production and the market, something that is very typical of the Swedish art glass industry. Artistry, craftsmanship, technological developments, and an ambitious exhibition program belong together. The designers work with a wide array of utility glass and art glass. The art glass is continuously exhibited and sold at galleries and museums across the world.

The history of the glassworks
Orrefors glassworks was founded in 1898 in a place that had iron works since 1726. Orrefors was probably called Orrafors from the beginning. The glassworks were by a lake called Orranäsajön. The name of the lake provided the first part of the name. The industry was close to streaming water to benefit from the water power. In Swedish, rapid streaming water is called "fors". Put Orra and Fors together, and you get the name Orrafors, which turned into Orrefors. Why was the iron industry abandoned? It grew less and less lucrative, and forestry became increasingly lucrative. To use all the labour and leftover wood the glassworks were founded. The little hot-shop attracted talented craftsmen and pioneering artists.

New technology in the service of art
During the 1930's and 40's the desire to experiment was great and many new fascinating techniques were used and further developed. Since 1987, art glass is only produced according to the designs of contemporary artists. The decision to produce only contemporary designs has lead to a surge in new artistic thinking and increased technical brilliance.

Genuine craftsmanship

Orrefors sells art glass of unique design , and it's produced by qualified craftsmen. Glass from Orrefors is genuine craftsmanship from beginning to end. During the product development period the designers and craftsmen work together to achieve the very best results.

The subsidiary Glasma produces the glass batch preparation, which is melted into glass melt. By producing the raw material in-house you can be sure that that everybody who is involved in the production process has a good work environment, and that all components are environmentally friendly. The ceramic pots that are used to melt glass are also produced in-house to ensure that all components and stages are controlled.

Whoever visits Orrefors will discover a modern and creative workplace. Old tradition, state of the art technology and new design go hand in hand. The result is thought provoking art and high quality utility items to enjoy.

The modern glassworks
The glassworks Kosta and Boda have reduced their CO2 emissions by 30% since 2003. To spare the environment lead is no longer used in the crystal. It is inevitable that glass breaks during the course of production. The shards are carefully colour separated to promote recycling. All possible measures are taken to make the company maximally environmentally friendly.

If you count all the people that are involved in the production of glass it is clear that the glassworks are important to the old Kingdom of Glass. The glassworks manage and renew a good tradition and make our surroundings more beautiful.
